Why We Love Them: We love the crunch and pop of green color pepitas add to our muesli. Like all seeds, they are also a good source of vitamins, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, plant protein and phytochemicals. Pepitas in particular are a rich source of magnesium which is important for your blood pressure, heart health, bone health and blood sugar levels. Pumpkin seeds contain antioxidants like carotenoids and vitamin E (4, 5, 6) which can reduce inflammation and protect your cells from harmful free radicals.
Sustainability Factors: We do not have enough data yet from the farm level to demonstrate any positive sustainability benefits of pepitas. Food miles should also be considered when comparing this non-native seed to more local options, therefore, it gets a lower sustainability score than flax.
